The week before spring break is finally here! Usually, people have no motivation this week and teachers don't want to start anything new or have a lot of work due because so many people leave early. In this class, my group started and finished our website this week. Grace and I filmed interviews, which I edited and put into our website. We also went down to the library and figured out how to do screen casting, which is recording your computer screen. We then took cool recordings of Afghanistan and San Jose, California on Google Earth. These are also on our website to give viewers a good look at how far they had to travel to America and where they came from. I liked working as a team for this project because when one of us didn't know how to do something, someone else did. We really leaned on each other as a team and made sure that everything we were working on individually connected to what everyone else was talking about. I am really proud of our finished project. Our website is called Gabydracyn because it's a mix of the names Gabby, Lydia, Grace, and Lauryn. I think we did a good job of making sure it would make sense to people that haven't read the book. At first I had no clue how we were going to make something like snowfall for our book, but it looks super good and as soon as we started adding elements to the page, it started to make sense in my mind. This week was mostly spent reading our books, since we need to finish them before we can start our project. I still don't know how we are supposed to make this project. We had a sub for two days this week, so no one really got anything done those days. I don't think anyone in our class has started their actual project because a lot of people are still working on their books. The people that are done with their books don't know what they're doing now, so they aren't doing much either. I am getting through my book pretty quickly. Surprisingly, I actually kind of like it. I don't remember the last time I read a book and it didn't feel like a chore. They use a lot of Afghan language and names in it, which are hard to understand and remember, but I can usually figure out what they mean by what context they are used in. Amir makes me so mad because he is such an awful friend and person. He feels so guilty all the time, but in all honestly I am glad he does. I don't really feel bad for him at all. It feels like yesterday I was a freshman on the first day getting lost trying to find the green pod. As we begin our last trimester, we were given a big task, to get in groups and recreate Snow Fall, but using a different book. When I saw the animation, I have no clue how we are going to do this. The task seems difficult, but I think my group will do a good job. Our book is The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini. It's actually a very good book, and I'm enjoying it so far. Some of the names are hard to pronounce and I've noticed that they have lots of cultural nick names for people. These make it hard to keep track of people, but doing the picture notes helps a lot because we can look back at different parts of the book that stood out to us. I was gone on Friday because we left for BPA states on Thursday. It was a really fun weekend, but I am so tired. These next two weeks are going to be very rough because I just want to go on spring break already. Before starting my presentation, I tackled my one page paper. I picked two outside sources, a painting and a movie that corresponded to my topic. I found many similarities and differences between my books and my outside sources. There are five questions we are supposed to answer in the paper, and I am using those questions to guide my speech during my actual pecha kucha presentation. I finished my slideshow of 10 slides and got pictures that will captivate my audience while I am speaking. The only thing left to do is figure out what I want to say and how I can be prepared for the slides switching, so I am not racing my presentation. I am not really nervous to present because I don't get scared with public speaking, but I just want to be prepared for the slides switching automatically. I have never done a presentation like this before, so I am interested to see how it compares to other presentations I have done.
